The Artist Statement
Yes, even as a child I was visibly good in art. I knew this because my art was often pinned to the school bulletin board. Colouring came to me then as an innate gift, unlike drawing, which still is an effort and a carefully practiced technique.
I was nine years old when I was first remarked by my teacher that my colour palette was 'too Indian.' I remember feeling perplexed and offended; I had simply put purple and pink together. By the time I was seventeen, I had learned how to white-wash my work to make it palatable. As a professional artist today, this still makes me sad.
